Drop Zones for Kids

Drop zones are a place kids can drop their gear (self sufficiently) and keep the home and themselves organized while doing it!

Drop Zone 1

What it looks like doesn’t much matter as long as it functions for you and them to have a place to put these things.

Shoes/Boots

Think year round. Will you want a mat to dry them? Boot dryer? Can they access it themselves?

Coats/Weather Gear

While in the beginning of the school year we have thin coats for cool mornings, we also have to take into account we will have snow pants, snow coats, hats and mittens in the colder months. Establish a place for those while making the system.

Backpacks

Backpacks can be heavy so make sure the place you pick is strong enough to hold. Can they access it themselves?

Drop Zone 2

Backpack Contents

Take into account everything that is going to come out of backpacks as well as go back in back packs. Make a drop zone for those items. Can they access it themselves?

Drop Zone 3

Papers-Homework Routine

Where do they do homework? Where do you put it when it is done?

Papers-Recycle

If we don’t need to keep it–DON’T! It is ok to recycle some art or papers. If you are done with it or not going, recycle.

Papers-Keep & Memory Box

We can display art for a while and then choose to keep or recycle.

We only get 1 file folder a year so the stuff we are keeping we are selective about. If you think it is a contender, put it on the memory shelf. At the end of the year go through memory shelf further and narrow down to the real contenders for a memory box.

Papers- Dates, To Do, Must Remember

Papers that have dates, dress ups, etc–post up or file away. For us that is a command center.

Important paperwork on you child, keep filed by child. This may be registration paper work, receipts, log in information, etc.

Permission slips/fill out forms: If you can sign and return that portion right now (not waiting on money or something)-do it now and put back in folder vs putting it off. Display the detail portion on the center or file.

Write/type/magic import dates/events/dress up days on the calendar to be updated on the weekly reset

Lunch menus, school calendars, etc are kept in the files and updated on the center weekly as well.
