Finding out!
I had a feeling I was pregnant when I was getting kind of sick at dinner time every day.  I also could not handle the smell of all the boy’s hair gel on picture day.  I took a test the day of picture day…the day before Ellie’s wedding…and it was negative.  I thought it was wrong but figured tests dont lie so went about life as usual.  Then, the following week, we were going on our trip to Minnesota and planned on going out in the city and I just couldn’t shake the feeling I needed to take a test.  It was positive before it even got to the control window. Holy cow, we were so excited!  Alex was shocked!!

Nolan’s first birthday was 6 weeks before that, and I had been done nursing for 5 weeks.  I had only one cycle.  Holy cow.  I had no idea how far along I was because I had only the one period so there was not space between to figure out a cycle length.  It was also my birthday weekend AND according to my math I was due right after school was out.  Seriously, timing was perfect, it took one try, and it was just to good to be true!

20 Week appointment and ultrasound
Our appointment went well.  We were anxious this time to make sure the baby is healthy and did not have a spot on the heart (soft sign of downs syndrome) like Nolan had. We watched very closely on the ultrasound.  We were also able to get a good angle for the gender.  Baby is breech but they are not really worried this early in the game, baby has room to rotate yet (thought I am pretty sure baby hasn’t yet).

At the appointment, the doctor informed us baby is very healthy and in the 51% for size.  No spots, no scares!  He also informed us that there were a couple issues with the placenta/me though.  I have a SLIGHT placenta prevea.  It is very slight and he has confidence that as my uterus grows the placenta will move up, but we do need to check at 28 weeks.

We were also informed that the cord insertion in the placenta is a little of-center.  Apparently the cord is supposed to be/usually in the center of the placenta but this one is offset.  It sound like this is not horrible, but there is a chance for baby to be on the smaller side.  (after having an almost 9 lb baby last time I am kinda ok with this) but we are also hoping that it doesn’t mean baby is malnourished.  This will all be checked at our 28 week ultrasound.

The doctor told me I needed to get a liver panel done and push fluids at the hospital.  I called my mom to pick up Nolan from the sitter, called Alex to let him know I was going, and then called the sitter to let her know it was someone else picking up my mom. I took myself to Neenah (I found it all by myself!), was there 3 hours, and came back clear.  I was home by bed time.

Anything else? Last week, Nolan had RSV and an ear infection.  I had conferences and saw Nolan 3 hours total (including the 2 hours I came home and watched him because he could’nt go to the sitters).  Nolan was taken care of by basically everyone but me and it was THE SICKEST I have ever seen him.  He was lethargic, skipping meals, miserable, and he just needed his mommy….and everyone else besides me was there for him. Then, Alex’s co-worker had a family emergency on Thursday and it looked like he would have to work into the night…meaning someone else was taking care of him again.  I lost it.  I was coming down with something.  I lost it.  I cried in my co-workers arms and just lost all control of my emotions.  I was a hot mess.  I just cannot wait to feel normal and in control again!

Labor Signs? After spring break contractions got as close as every 7 minutes….that has slowed quite a bit with rest.  Still some intense ones but not pain just really really tight.
Anything else?

Pregnancy is hard. With Nolan it was an Echogenic intraventricular focus (EIF), then bed rest at 28 weeks due to frequent Braxton Hicks/Contractions.  It was hard and it put a lot of life into perspective.  Makes your realize how small you are and how much bigger than you life really is.  Then on his due date, the amazing, perfect, little boy that has filled our life with so much came into the world as healthy as can be.
Here we are with baby number 2.  Our little baby girl.  31 weeks I am having quite a few contractions  and some are more powerful than I ever remember the 12  week of Nolan’s being.  It went on for 2 days so I called the doctor, just to rule out its your second it just feels different.  I came in and they did a non-stress test. They confirmed I was indeed having contractions and decided to do a fetal fibronectin test just to be safe.  That came in negative.  They did an ultrasound and found she is head down (yay!) and cervix is long (yay).  I am not going into labor (phew).  While head down they also discovered her head was very small and did a full bio-physical profile.  It was discovered that she is measuring VERY small.  She is only in the 10th percentile for her age.  90% of babies her age are bigger than her 3lbs5oz self.  This means this little girl isn’t quite growing as much as she should.  I also still have my placenta prevea.  Though it is moving, it is not in the clear yet. This means 2 appointments a week for tests, observation, monitoring, and evaluating.
If she would need to be taken early due to failure to thrive, I would need a C-Section at this point because of the prevea.  I just want more time.  I want my my baby girl to grow, I want to hold her in my body and allow my body to care for her the way it is designed.  I want my placenta to have time to move.  I want to be able to pick up my newborn and my 19 month old and put them to bed.  I want her to stay out of the NICU because I want to breast feed and I want to hold her the way I held my miracle, Nolan.  Now that I have stated my wants, I need to allow put it aside.  At this point in time, I have no choices, there is nothing I can do and it is nothing I did that got us here.  We are just along for the ride to see this little miracle arrive when the time is right for her.
Like I said, pregnancy is hard.
Look how much our babies look alike!  Nolan’s 32 week ultrasound is on top, and baby girls 31 week ultrasound is on the bottom.

How far along? 32 weeks

  • 2 check ups a week started.  We started going two times a week.  Monday for non-stress tests and Thursdays for biophysical profiles. This week, the appointments went well.  Non-stress test was with an associate and they said it looked fine and I was sent home. Thursday’s ultra sound went well and showed some growth and we got the ok to go to Katie Nelms’ wedding in Illinois.
all those wisps on the top of the head
are hair apparently!

How far along? 33 Weeks

  • 2 check ups the week again.  Monday went great and showed everything to be well.  The ultrasound showed everything to be well, movement, practice breathing, and position good.  It also revealed she had hair!  We were referred to a high risk specialist to check on the placenta placement and her head size and see what she thought.
How far along? 34 Weeks

Total Weight Gain? +27 (from 9 week appointment)
Stretch Marks? nothing new
Sleep: pretty crappy
Movement: she moves a lot!

  • We went back to regular appointments.  On Tuesday we met with regular doctor and had a normal 15 minute appointment!  It was great to be normal again!
  • We met with the specialist (Dr. Steele).  She did a very extensive ultrasound and she found that the placenta is still only 1 cm away but I could go with a normal birth.  We will need to have meds on hand if bleeding gets out of control.  She also said the head size is small, but she is assuming it is familial because my head is tiny and my body is normal.  They did find something interesting around the heart. They said it could be nothing but they just wanted a heart specialist to look at it.

Labor Signs? Just the lots of braxton hicks!

How far along? 36 Weeks

  • Tuesday was our normal appointment.  Based on what Dr. Steele said, our doctor said we could go back to normal appointments.  We can deliver at the local hospital, and all the tests they ran to rule out viruses and strep B all came back negative.  So far, everything is great!  Light at the end of this scary tunnel.  We were excited to go to the cardiologist to rule out anything else and go back to being normal OB patients.
  • Thursday was our pediatric cardiologist appointment.  We went in thinking they thing they saw was going to be no big deal. After almost 2 hours in ultrasound, the actual cardiologist coming in and checking live ultrasound, and then 3 specialists looking over the film it was discovered that baby girl has what is called double aortic arch.  We could accept that, we knew there was an extra something going on, but we really didnt think it was a big deal.  Then, they explained what this could mean for us.  Apparently, this arch could be parallel to each other and there would be no problem with having 2 of these arches, but there is also a chance that it makes a vasular ring.  This ring would go around the trachea and the esophagus causing difficulty breathing and swallowing.

So what does this mean for our family right now?

  • We will need to deliver at a sister hospital that is further away but also has Children’s hospital of Wisconsin (Fox Cities)
  • We will need to have the hospitalist on staff to check her out.  We need to have them listen for wheezing and labored breathing.  If she is really struggling, should could need a breathing tube inserted. We also have to have a nurse watch the feedings to make sure that she does not choke.
  • We will need to do the pulse-ox test earlier than they normally do on infants to make sure she is getting enough oxygen while breathing and they will need to take her blood pressure on her hands and feet on both sides (apparently their blood pressure can be different on the 2 sides)
  • She will need an echo done on her heart right away.  This is because they cannot see very well to confirm/deny the vascular ring because of all the bones and her size while in the uterus.  They will need to see if first hand on her chest.
  • Depending on what the echo shows, she may need a CT scan. These CT scans are only available in Milwaukee’s Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
  • If it is indeed a vascular ring, they will need to do surgery regardless in the first 3 weeks of her life.  This will also be at Children’s.  It will be about 3 days in the hospital.  It is not open heart surgery, but one that goes through the armpit.
  • We will also need to test for 22Q.  Apparently this is a genetic disorder in which can lead to malformations of the heart and other body parts, physical limits, and learning disabilities. We will do a blood test when she is born to test for this as well. When they know if a child has 22Q it allows them to start treating the symptoms right away.
  • There is no more we can do prenatal, so all of this will begin when she is born.  It is up to our OB (O’Leary) to see if he would want to induce  to have all this controlled or let me go naturally and the staff would respond accordingly.  We will find out tomorrow.
How far along? 37 Weeks

This weeks’ appointment–Cardiologist follow up

  • Doctor took everything the cardiologist said and we decided I can have a normal birth, I would deliver at the hospital that has a NICU and Children’s hospital, there will be a pediatrician present, and we should try to stay calm.   Even in worst case scenario, this is a very manageable heart defect.
  • Our doctor is going on vacation to Europe for a week and a half.  We scheduled our induction for the day he comes back, but in the case I would go early, he passed our file off to everyone of his associates so they would be informed.
  • I am 1cm dilated, 50% effaced

  • Been having some false labor with contractions getting rather regular and intense, only to go away.
  • I have been teaching for my final week through my false labor.  Getting tired, but chugging along.

  • Went to the hospital over Memorial Day weekend (Saturday) because I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes.  They were getting more and more intense.
  • I was 2/2.5 cm dilated at the hospital.  The plan was for me to walk, try to get things moving, and if there was no change we would be sent home.  After walking 2 miles in laps around the hospital I had minimal if any change so I was sent home.
  • Tuesday was regular 39 week appointment with associate, was 3cm, 30%effaced still.  At this point, its looking like induction.
We did not go into labor on our own so we were off to our induction!  Our doctor got home the night before and our induction was scheduled for 6:15am, arriving at 6am on Thursday June 2, 2016.
